An international liquidity line created by the International Monetary Fund to replace the gold standard. It is a book-entry payment means granted to each member country, consisting of a basket of currencies including the U.S. dollar, the euro, the British pound, the Japanese yen, and, for an undetermined period, the Chinese yuan. In situations of low liquidity, a country can exchange its SDRs for the currency it needs.
